Matt Tibbitts (MSFS/IBD 20)

1. Hometown: West Hartford, CT
2. Current city: Arlington, VA
3. Other degrees: B.S. in Health Administration, minors in Business and Economics from the University of Scranton (2014)
4. Current Role: Presidential Management Fellow in the Office of Management and Budget
5. How did your career start? The catalyst of my career was being a Fulbright Scholar to Malaysia after graduating from Scranton. This experience completely shifted my focus to international opportunities and put me on the path towards going back to school for an advanced degree at Georgetown. More recently, being selected for the Presidential Management Fellowship has started my career as a civil servant in the federal government.
6. What is your favorite IBD memory? My favorite memory would be the time I spent in Sweden as a Wallenberg International Fellow. We had the five year Fellowship reunion and it was an enjoyable and inspiring experience to spend time with all of the alumni, foundation staff, SSE colleagues, and members of the Georgetown community.
7. How did your experience in IBD prepare you for your career? I remember taking Dr. Moran’s course, Business and Investment Negotiations, where we learned about how countries can attract foreign direct investment through strong investment promotion agencies. I used much of what I learned in this course during my interview at SelectUSA, the US’ investment promotion agency, where I ended up working as a contractor for two years.
8. What was your most memorable IBD course? My most memorable course was Ethical Decision Making for Global Managers with Dr. Kline. We discussed ethical dilemmas around the world and he had this innate ability to draw out differing opinions, and steer the discussion into challenging conundrums, all while withholding his own personal views. I utilize the decision-making framework from that course regularly to this day.
